Day 3: Exploring Horseshoe Bend and driving to Kanab, Utah

Writer: Hans PedersenHans Pedersen

Yesterday we started early morning with a breakfast and stroll through the Road 66 main strip at the small city where we stayed for the night, Williams, the largest city / village near the Grand Canyon South Rim. There is a real southwestern feel about the city : very relaxed atmosphere away from the big metropolitan life and nosy / crowded cities like LA and Las Vegas. We meet a funny “cowboy” at one of the shops who was a former electrical engineer from San Francisco, who moved there pre-Covid and was now working remotely and running a cowboy tourist shop and business. He was black American - nice that he can be a fully accepted cowboy’s today.

After exploring Williams, we started the 4 hour drive to our 3rd stop : Kanab, Utah.

The driving here is really amazing: huge straight roads & people are not driving as aggressive as in Europe. And they all drive huge SUVs and pickup trucks around here. Along the road there were many Navajo markets, where native Indians sells handcrafted jewellery and souvenirs.

On the way we stopped by one of the major national wonders in Arizona, close to the Grand Canyon North Rim (the other side of where we were the day before): The Horseshoe Bend. Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page. It is also referred to as the East Rim of the Grand Canyon. Around 15 min walk from the parking spot we got to see the absolutely stunning views of the canyon and the “greenish” river below.

After Horseshoe Bend, we drove around 1 hour over the state boarder to the small city of Kanab in Utah. We were reminded how big the US is as we suddenly had to add 1 hour to the the time. Located at ca. 1500 meters, Kanab has chilled nights/mornings (6 C) and warm days (up to 25+ C) during this time. We will stay 5 nights here in Kanab, doing days trips from here. Many “western movies” have been shot in the Kanab area and it’s a great place to explore several of the sites and national parks around this part of Utah.
